One lakh more to take SSC exams

AHMEDABAD: This year, nearly one lakh more students will appear for SSC board exams scheduled to be held in March 2011. According to experts, the rise is a significant one as the numbers are up from 7.73 lakh students in 2009 to 8.72 lakh in 2010.

"Over 98,000 more students are appearing for the SSC board exams this year. This rise is significant as it means that enrolment drives have ensured that more students carry their studies beyond primary schooling and complete their secondary and higher secondary schooling," said Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board ( GSHSEB) examination secretary GM Rabari.

Rabari said that this is the first time that a new paper style is being introduced in the SSC board exams, which will have a 50:50 mix of subjective and objective-type questions. The system is being introduced so as to lessen the burden of examination on students. However, students will be required to sit a little more than three hours to write the exams.

Meanwhile, the number of students who will appear for the HSC (general) stream exam has recorded a rise of 38,000 this year as compared to last year. Here, a big number of students are those who had failed in one subject. Board officials say that there is also a sizeable number of students who are taking the exam again to pursue English as a subject. "There are many students who had not opted for English when they passed their HSC and are now taking the exam to pass HSC (general) stream with English subject," Rabari said.

Meanwhile, it has come as a surprise that there has been no rise in the number of students appearing for the HSC (science) board exams despite several attempts by agencies to give a boost to the dwindling interest of students in science subjects.

The board had expressed serious concern over the stagnation of number of students in the science stream and made different plans to take it to at least one lakh. However, the number of students has not risen beyond the 90,000-figure since the past two years; this year it is at 89,850.

SSC, HSC exam dates announced
MUMBAI: Maharashtra's board of secondary and higher secondary education has announced dates for SSC (Std X) and HSC (Std XII) exams. The practical and oral exams for the HSC will be held from February 3 to 20, while the theory papers will be conducted between February 23 and March 19. The oral and practical exams for the SSC will be held from February 10 to 26, while the theory papers will be conducted from March 4 to March 19.

This is the first year for which students will be tested for two separate levels of mathematics for the SSC. A couple of years ago, the board gave students who were weak in math the option of studying general mathematics—a stepped down version of the regular math curriculum.

This is also the first year for which the board will conduct exams in Sindhi, Kannada and Telugu for the SSC. This year, there will be a three-hour paper for geography, which was earlier for two-and-a-half hours.

As usual, there will be multiple sets of question papers for the SSC mathematics and English (third language) papers as well as the HSC English paper in a bid to curb cheating. Students will have to score an aggregate of at least 105 marks as the sum total for all three language papers taken together, and at least 25% in each language, to pass the SSC exam.

Students will have to score 35% each in the 40-mark project and 60-mark theory paper for environmental science to pass the SSC and HSC. For news and updates on the board exams, students can log on to www.msbshse.ac.in....
